Mobile may be taking the dominant share of time spent with digital media, but much of it is going to, well, killing time. According to a daily time spent analysis of mobile app users (Android-only) during the six months ended in May, mobile gaming apps consume half again as much time each day as the next closest application, social media activity.
Regardless of the category, one thing is clear: the increasing availability of mobile applications is fueling consumer time spent with them. Year-over-year, mobile users have increased the amount of time they spend daily with apps by 11%, the number of sessions by 27%, and the amount of data consumed by nearly 29%.
